Bad Santa Party Does Good
We're not sure who has been naughty this year, but we definitely know who has been nice!
At their employee Christmas party earlier this month, Nasco Staffing Solutions created a fun and unique way for guests to contribute to the Biscuit Fund. Pictures with Santa and his elves were offered by donation, and party-goers whooped it up to a grand total of $226.
We're sure Saint Nick will agree when we say, "Nasco, you rock!"
“Biscuit” was a stray, wandering the streets when he was repeatedly stabbed by an unknown person and left for dead. The small dog managed to pull himself half-dead into a nearby garage, where he was found by a family and rushed to a veterinarian. Biscuit was transferred to the BC SPCA, where he was nursed back to health in a safe, nurturing environment. The Biscuit Fund was created to help care for many other sick and injured homeless animals like Biscuit.

Nasco crews help bring dinosaurs back from extinction-- live in Vancouver and Winnipeg
Perhaps one of the coolest shows that Nasco Staffing Solutions has ever been a part of, the BBC’s “Walking with Dinosaurs – The Live Experience” was none other than a ‘one-of-a-kind’ experience for Nasco crews as they helped transform the MTS Centre in Winnipeg and GM Place in Vancouver back to a time when dinosaurs ruled the Earth— a mere 200 million years ago!
“Walking with Dinosaurs,” for those who’ve yet to see it, is an extraordinary theatrical production where audiences get to experience 15 life-size species ranging from the Stegosaurus to the T-Rex—as snarling, terrifying and magnificent as they were in real life.
Accompanied by a spooky soundtrack of each species’ spine-chilling roars, the whole production consists of 125 performers and 27 semi-trucks.
Humans skillfully puppet the smaller dinosaurs while the larger ones move using a combination of animatronics, an army of puppeteers and a large stabilizing plate.
When “Walking with Dinosaurs” first rolled into Winnipeg last November, the crew certainly had their work cut out for them. A “unique” conversion to say the least, the whole arena was laid out with a proscenium stage at one end and the entire arena floor used as a performing surface.
There were 233 positions filled over seven days in Winnipeg ranging from stagehands and loaders to riggers, electricians and carpenters.
GM Place required even more crew when the show hit Vancouver late January. There were more than 240 positions filled with a large emphasis on audio, video and lighting to make the transition from GM Place to the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous eras all the easier!
The end result was a grand display of cutting edge animatronics and high-tech puppetry—complete with smoke, lighting and a large screen projection of landscapes taken from all over the world. The effects were unbelievably realistic, as the story moves through 160 million years!
“It really was mind blowing to see these giant, mechanical things move around for the first time,” said Nasco Vancouver’s Production Supervisor Mike Price. “I just couldn’t get over how immensely huge they were.”
Being a live performance, the Nasco crews ensured there weren’t any opportunities for glitches. And when the show ended and the lights came on, night after night, it was quite apparent that audience reactions were perhaps, even greater than the dinosaurs themselves!
